To be young, gifted and Black has been a blessing for the Harvard student who balances a role on her own TV show while double-concentrating in social studies and African-American studies while at Harvard, PEOPLE reports.

Yara Shahidi is also an activist in her own right, constantly speaking out on social issues like gun control, sexism and racism.

“Being on a show like Black-ish to begin with, in which every week is a new topical issue that we’re discussing, it means that we had parallel conversations in real life. And I think it did do a lot of, it helped me prepare, just because it really did make me think, at the age of 14, at the age of 15, 16, 17, 18, what my opinion was, and why,” she said in a previous interview.

They represent a diverse group of change makers supporting GLSEN’s mission to create safe and inclusive schools for all, and they are shaping the conversation on LGBTQ equality, gender issues, and a host of social movements. We look forward to celebrating their work and that of students and educators from across the country.”

The event will take place in Los Angeles on Oct. 19 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
